The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent, and confident learners. Counselors have an impact on these years by implementing a school counseling program and collaborating with school staff, parents, and the community to create a safe and respectful learning environment. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, counselors help students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities, and develop social/emotional skills in response to issues they face.

Effective Listening and Communication Skills
Listening and Communicating is simply passing back and forth feelings, thoughts, or information.
Facial expression is communication: sad, happy, surprised, worried, scared, angry, lonely, disappointed, excited.
Hand gestures are a form of communication, too!
You can communicate through art, music, dancing, writing, drama, and singing.
You can communicate with one word: Yes, no, stop, go, wait, okay, look, please, thanks, sorry
You can communicate with no words and just sounds: Grunting, sighing, laughing, crying.
You can communicate by putting words together in phrases. The meaning you give to words depends upon how you express them. Were you sincere? Were you kind? Were you making eye contact? Were you approachable? Were you listening or just hearing?
Effective listening and communication involves taking turns talking, making eye contact, responding to the other persons thoughts, story, or comments and asking questions.
I am looking forward to a great month of learning to effectively communicate and listen.
